Welcome to the Willis Candle Shop, where passion meets purpose
As a retired FBI Special Agent, former U.S. Marine Sergeant, and the founder of Willis Candle Shop, I, Rob Woloszyn, transitioned a career defined by service into a craft defined by precision. My path to discipline began in the U.S. Marine Corps, where I served as an enlisted Marine and achieved the rank of Sergeant. During my tenure with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267 (HMLA-267), I was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with Gold Star for achieving a less than 8% error rate during a Marine Corps Disbursing On-Site Examination Team (MCDOSET) audit—a level of precision unheard of in squadron administration. Following my separation in January 1994, I utilized the Montgomery GI Bill to build my academic foundation, graduating Cum Laude from National University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in April 1998 (View Degree Verification).
While working at the FBI San Diego Field Office, I was accepted into the Special Agent program, entering the FBI Academy at Quantico in March 1999 as a member of Class 99-08. Our entire 20-week training cycle was filmed for the CNN Perspectives special, "Quantico: The Making of an FBI Agent," which provided a rare, start-to-finish look at our class's rigorous preparation (Watch the Documentary).
Following graduation in July 1999, I was assigned to the Houston Field Office, where I spent the next 20 years investigating high-stakes matters including healthcare fraud, public corruption, government fraud, civil rights, and counterterrorism. I concluded my tenure with the Bureau in April 2019, dedicating my final five years to the management of sensitive criminal and national security informant matters. During my tenure, I was honored to receive the U.S. Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service for work on matters of public record, such as the 2011 thwarting of an international assassination plot detailed in federal court filings. In 2016, I was further recognized for my work in national security and criminal informant matters, receiving the FBI Medal of Excellence.

The Sabbatical: A Mission of Support
Retiring in 2019 marked a pivot from federal service to domestic support. For the next four years, I managed our household to support my wife’s career as an FBI Intelligence Analyst and the Tactical Operations Center (TOC) Coordinator for Houston FBI SWAT. By handling the logistics of our home, I ensured she had the support needed for her mission-critical role.
In the summer of 2022, exactly 14 days after we began moving into our property in Willis, Texas, our transition met an unexpected mission. While we were in the middle of unpacking boxes in 100-degree heat, two six-month-old white Labs appeared on our doorstep. They appeared to be from the same litter, nearly identical except for one distinct feature: a single piercing blue eye on one of them. We immediately took them to a local veterinarian to check for microchips, but found none. For the next three weeks, we searched for their original owners via several websites and reached out to friends, family, and neighbors to find them a new home—all unsuccessfully.
During this period, we were able to assess the situation based on their behavior within our 2-by-5-mile rectangular neighborhood. Even though they would roam as far as four miles away, they returned to our doorstep with the precision of a watch alarm at exactly 5:00 AM and 5:00 PM for meals. It became clear that they had either been dumped or abused and no longer cared to return to their origin, or they had been displaced so far that their natural tracking ability was broken. They had chosen us as their new home. Though we hadn't anticipated this during a summer move, I built a fence to contain them and provide a secure place to run and play. We transitioned from two 20-pound dogs to a household of four, with Ziggy and Trouble now weighing in at 80 pounds apiece. At over four years old, they are permanent, loyal members of our family.
Choosing Loyalty Over the Commute
Between 2022 and 2024, I earned my active Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification. During this same educational sprint, I completed the comprehensive coursework and passed the four-part board examination to earn the Certified Fraud Examiner Qualification, which I held for three years before choosing to let the active registration lapse; it is currently maintained as an inactive, non-registered historical milestone to allow full focus on our active manufacturing operations and data analytics commitments. I also completed the Data Analytics Essentials Course - Python, SQL, and Tableau from the University of Texas at Austin, McCombs School of Business, and hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Data Science and Business Analytics from The University of Texas at Austin. However, after a 2-year educational sprint, I chose my 15-year-old dog, Rico, over a 70-mile commute and a third-career lucrative salary. I refused to leave him unattended for 14 hours a day after being his constant companion for 6 years, and this is where the idea for the Willis Candle Shop was born.
After working out of my garage for 6 months, I built a dedicated 17 x 32-foot metal building on our property, allowing me to perfect my craft while remaining available to Rico until his passing in January 2026. Today, this facility allows me to operate a high-performance e-commerce business while continuing to care for our three remaining dogs.
The Willis Candle Shop Wax Matrix: Natural Purity
Our commitment to quality is rooted in our specialized 79/19/2 Wax Matrix. Every candle is crafted with 79% American Soy Organics Millennium Soy Wax and 19% Freedom Coconut Wax. We finish the blend with 2% natural beeswax, which acts as a natural hardening and smoothing agent. This allows us to achieve a perfect, long-lasting burn without the use of any non-natural additives, petroleum byproducts, or paraffin.
Forensic Precision Meets Data-Driven E-Commerce
I leverage sophisticated machine learning methodologies to drive our e-commerce strategy. By utilizing supervised predictive models—including XGBoost, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting algorithms—and employing unsupervised K-Means and Hierarchical clustering for market segmentation, I ensure every business decision is rooted in rigorous statistical inference. Willis Candle Shop operates at the intersection of traditional quality and modern analytical rigor, utilizing Python, SQL, and Tableau to audit every production cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Willis Candle Shop guarantee non-toxic, safe candles?
We utilize a 79/19/2 blend of American Soy Organics’ Millennium soy and Freedom coconut waxes, combined with natural beeswax. This natural hardening agent allows us to avoid non-natural additives while maintaining air integrity. Every candle is phthalate-free, paraben-free, and non-toxic.
Why did you start Willis Candle Shop after a career with the FBI?
I chose to start this business to maintain the flexibility needed to care for my senior dogs. It allowed me to trade a 70-mile commute for a dedicated workshop on my property, ensuring my family—and specifically my dog Rico—received the attention they deserved.
What makes your candles different from mass-produced brands?
We blend our own coconut, soy, and beeswax in-house to exact specifications. We tested over 500 combinations to dial in the best scent throw. As a NaVOBA Certified Veteran Owned Business, we prioritize forensic transparency and industrial-grade quality over mass-market shortcuts.
